On Windows and OS X systems the shield may occasionally disappear for a short time while Sophos is installing updates.
Normally however it will reappear within a few minutes.
Occasionally the Sophos client cannot connect to the Sophos update servers because they are unavailable for some other reason, such as a temporary internet problem.

However because the shield is hidden it does mean that you are more likely to miss problems with your Sophos installation.
